“H” grades get harder and lighter, “B” grades softer and darker, with F and HB in the middle. The everyday US “#2 pencil” is exactly HB. Artists reach for the soft B grades to shade and the hard H grades for clean, faint guidelines.

Reading the graphite scale

Pencil grades run along a single line from hard and light to soft and dark. The “H” end (up to 9H) is hard, pale, and precise; the “B” end (up to 9B) is soft, dark, and smudgeable; and F and HB sit in the middle for everyday use. The higher the number, the more extreme the grade in that direction.

The letter scale is European, but American pencils are often sold by number — and the two line up neatly, with the familiar #2 pencil being an HB. Whether you’re drafting clean technical lines or shading a sketch, matching the grade to the task makes the tool do the work for you.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What does HB mean on a pencil?

HB is the middle of the graphite scale — a balance of Hardness (H) and Blackness (B). It's the everyday all-purpose grade for writing and note-taking, dark enough to read easily but hard enough to resist smudging. On the US number system, HB is exactly the classic #2 pencil.

Is a #2 pencil the same as HB?

Yes. The US number system lines up with the middle of the European letter scale: #1 is B, #2 is HB, #2½ is F, #3 is H, and #4 is 2H. So the #2 pencil required for many standardized tests is simply an HB.

What's the difference between H and B grades?

H grades are harder and lighter — they lay down less graphite, make crisp faint lines, and resist smudging, which suits technical drafting and guidelines. B grades are softer and darker — they lay down more graphite for rich, smudgeable lines, which is what artists want for sketching and shading. F and HB sit in between.

Which pencil grade is best for sketching versus drafting?

For sketching and shading, reach for the soft B grades — 2B to 6B give expressive, dark tones. For drafting, technical drawing, and fine guidelines, the hard H grades (2H to 4H) keep lines crisp and light. HB and F are the versatile middle for everyday writing and general drawing.
