Why Gel Pens Skip and Blob: Ball, Ink Viscosity, and the Fixes That Actually Work

Skipping and blobbing are the two most common gel pen complaints, and they're often treated as the same problem — "the pen isn't writing right" — but they're actually two different mechanical failures with two different causes and two different fixes. Knowing which one you're dealing with saves you from trying a fix aimed at the wrong problem.
Skipping: the ball isn't picking up ink
Skipping — where the pen writes intermittently, leaving gaps mid-stroke — almost always means the small ball at the tip isn't picking up a continuous film of ink as it rotates. Why gel ink specifically is more skip-prone than liquid ink
